There’s a dirty little secret about traffic generation that nobody wants to hear, but I’m going to tell you. It may not be what you want to hear, but it’s what you need to hear . . . so place your ear real close to the screen and I’ll tell you.
There used to be all sorts of tricks you could pull off to rank well in the search engines . . . and they worked. Those same tricks today will get you tossed down in the rankings with all the other lowly tricksters. Search engines are much more savvy nowadays and want to be a relevant as they possibly can in order to retain their user-base. This means you have to be real. No more tricks. Just deliver quality content that people want to see – and the search engines will reward you for it.
Of course, you still need to put in the work to see what keywords are most relevant to your site. You still need to write compelling content that is most relevant to your site and your keywords. You still need to design your site in a way that is search-engine-friendly. You can’t just “be real” like you are at the local pub after your fifth pint of your favorite brew . . . you have to be smart. Make your page titles and descriptions as relevant as possible to your site and your keywords. Include relevant alt tags for your images. In other words . . . do the work.
Google knows. Oh yes, they know everything. They know when you are sleeping. They know when you’re awake. They know if you’ve been good or bad. So be good, for goodness sake! Google can see how long a person stays on a particular page . . . and on a particular site. The longer people stay on your page . . . and the longer they stay on your site, the more relevant your site is for the keywords that led the traffic there in the first place. If you be real and be smart, you are well on your way to be good. Create content that people want. Make it engaging. Give them pretty pictures to look at. Include a video for people to watch. Think of the sites that you like, why you like them, and why you continue to go back. You think they’re good . . . so be good.
OK . . . so now you’re real, smart, and good. Share your content and make it easy for others to share it as well. If you’ve put in the effort to be real, smart, and good, your visitors will want to share it with their friends and followers as well. Share your content on your Facebook page, through Twitter, and on LinkedIn. Send it out to your other social networks as well. Stand tall and be proud because you’ve made the commitment to be real, be smart, and be good!
There’s more to traffic generation, but if you can grasp, and stick with, these four principles, you are well on your way to generating traffic. If you get stuck, you can always contact us for help.
