Hey everyone, Sarah Giometti here. And in this video, I want to talk about what is local SEO marketing.
What really is local SEO marketing and how does it differ from traditional SEO or Search Engine Optimization? SEO has been a buzzword and it’s been around for over 10 years, probably 15 or more, pretty much since the internet and Google started, there’s been some form of SEO. There’s Black hat, which is really bad and it will get you banned. White hat is the clean good stuff that you should be doing, but local SEO is very different. It is focused on a geographical market: Your city, your county, the city surrounding your city, where you might draw customers from. But the foundation of it all is a Google My Business listing. So your Google My Business, or Google Maps listing, is the foundation of a local strategy and everything else you do is to improve your chances of showing up in the Google Maps 3-Pack for local searches when your local customers or potential customers are looking for you. So it’s a very different strategy than a traditional SEO strategy. However, a lot of the components of it are still the same, but it’s all done with a local focus.
You’re still going to do keyword research but you want to do it with keyword geographic tags in it: City, state, county, those kinds of things. You still want to create content, but again it’s still the local focus. So you want to make sure that you’re tying in the keyword phrases that you want to rank for and the cities that you want to rank for and tie it together in creating your content. It’s a much more strategic-focused strategy. The other component is reviews for local businesses and in the Maps 3-Pack the reviews are very prominent and people believe reviews as much, if not more than a personal recommendation. So you want to make sure you have a review and reputation management strategy as part of your local SEO. And so that is the bare bones basics of what local SEO is is your Google My Business listing, optimizing that, creating content with a local focus and local keyword focus, doing keyword research that’s locally focused and geographically targeted, and reviews, making sure you’ve got a fair amount of high quality four and five-star reviews on your maps listings so that the people looking for your type of business or service see that and choose you over the competition who don’t have nearly as many or none at all, the reviews really matter.
